Causes

The main cause of Balanitis is poor hygiene. Sometimes even injuries caused by some sort of accident could also lead to the inflammation. In very rare cases, the cause might even be unknown.

People with uncircumcised penises are the prime candidates for the inflammation.

Problems such as reactive arthritis and lichen sclerosis et atrophicus can also lead to Balanitis. Infection, harsh soaps or failure to rinse off the soap off the area, after bath can also lead to the inflammation.

Balanitis results from the presence of a foreskin, which may be redundant and phimotic. This preputial cloak harbors beneath it normally desquamating epithelial cells, glandular secretions, and Mycobacterium smegmatis. It provides a warm, moist culture medium for any incidental organisms that may be present.

Infection, harsh soaps or failure to rinse off the soap off the area, after bath can also lead to the inflammation.
Yeast infection, bacterial infection, sexually transmitted diseases, irritation from condoms, clothings and spermicides can also cause the inflammation.

People with Diabetes, obesity, Diabetes have a higher risk of getting balanitis. It might even occur due to reaction to certain drugs. Having sex with a partner with vaginitis also increases the risk. As stated before, in some cases, the cause might be unknown.
